Did you know that 2019’s biggest scientific news story featured a pregnant newborn? Indeed, last year did not disappoint in delivering amazing information from start to finish! To give you a good dose of scientific thrills, we’ve rounded up five accounts of astounding events and discoveries from 2019.
1. Researchers At NASA Saw A Black Hole Tearing Apart A Star
For the first time in the history of science, researchers at NASA, along with a team of astronauts, were able to observe first-hand an extraordinarily massive black hole in the process of tearing apart a star. This remarkable breakthrough was made possible by Ohio State University’s aerial surveillance system.
This star-shredding marvel is known as a tidal disruption event (TDE), and they only occur once every 10,000 to 100,000 years in a galaxy the size of the Milky Way. Isn’t it incredible that such a rare event was able to be directly observed by Earth’s astrophysicists?
